The temperature needed for ignition is much lower than you might think! Almost all organic material in the form of a dust cloud will ignite at temperatures below 500°C (932°F) - approximately the same temperature as a newly extinguished match.
- Firefly delivers detection systems that can detect particles as low as 130°C (266°F)

Imagine a sparkler. The sparks generated from it have a high temperature but little mass. On the other hand, the hot stem of the sparkler has a lower temperature but much greater mass. This means that the stem (which is effectively a hot particle), but not the sparks, can be used to light a cigarette. Wood dust in your process can in the same way ignite when it encounters a hot particle. It is therefore vital to not only detect sparks but also hot particles, within your process.
- Firefly systems detect both sparks AND hot particles

It is crucial that detection is not affected by irrelevant energy sources, such as daylight or other ambient interferences. With some conventional detection systems, it is not uncommon for production to stop due to a false alarm triggered by ambient light. This often results in release of unnecessary extinguishing as well as costly downtime.
- Firefly systems use a unique worldwide patented infrared (IR) technology, measuring radiated energy instead of light

Large quantities of water, extinguishing foam or sprinkler systems are common methods of extinguishing. However these are not always suitable for protecting certain types of machinery. This is why Firefly has developed an efficient low pressure extinguishing system using fine water mist. Water mist cools the fire area and blocks the heat radiation. The atomized droplets expand in volume by 1.700 times, thereby displacing oxygen required for combustion.
- Firefly's water mist systems efficiently extinguish fire without causing damage to sensitive machinery, such as moulders
